Macbeth and Frankenstein comparison Essay
Both Victor and Macbeth have great qualities. Victor is smart and curious. He wants to fight disease and discover the mysteries of nature. Macbeth has a high ranking in society and has authority. They are both very well off and have good families but get greedy and end up ruining what they have. Macbeth gets carried away with his experiments and ends up losing all of his family and friends, and dies in the end of the story. The same thing happens to Macbeth. He gets carried away with his thirst for power, that he kills people even after he gains the throne, and ends up losing his friends and family, and also dies in the end of the story. Both Macbeth and Frankenstein are powerful, ambitious characters. However, they have very different ambitions and desires. Macbethââ¬â¢s ambition is to become king by committing murder whereas Frankensteinââ¬â¢s is to create life. For example ââ¬Å"I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.â⬠-Victor Frankenstein, chapter 3 Frankenstein. ââ¬Å"Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires.â⬠-Macbeth, act 1 scene 4 Macbeth. Frankenstein wants to create something innovative and astonishing, something that he can be remembered for and something that will push the boundaries of life and science. This is evident when he says, ââ¬Å"pioneer a new wayâ⬠and ââ¬Å"unfold to the world the deepest mysteries.â⬠We can understand why Frankenstein is driven by creative ambition when he uses the word ââ¬Å"pioneerâ⬠which indicates to the reader that he wants to be the ââ¬Å"leaderâ⬠of this science in the future and wants to make progress beyond existing limits. Furthermore, the word ââ¬Å"deepestâ⬠does have some connotations of ââ¬Å"darkâ⬠and ââ¬Å"unknown;â⬠this could be foreshadowing to the reader what is to come. Unlike Frankenstein, Macbeth is completely consumed by his ambition to kill. He has to commit murder to achieve his goals and his ambition is a major factor in what leads him to do so. Macbeth is already in a highly regarded position within his kingdom, but once he has had a taste of this newfound power, his desire for more cannot be stopped. ââ¬Å"Stars,â⬠in the eyes of a Jacobean audience, would suggest something heavenly or Godly. So by saying this it is almost blasphemes: Macbeth is asking God to turn a blind eye on what he is about to do and asking that his true, evil intentions not be understood by his peers, ââ¬Å"black and deepà desires.â⬠Both Macbeth and Frankenstein, to their respective audiences, would have been viewed as people defying the boundaries of life and humanity. The stories of ââ¬Å"Macbethâ⬠and Frankenstein are two texts depicting the life and tragic flaws of the two main characters which bring them to an eventual downfall. The two pieces of writing have both similar and different characteristics between them. It can be argued that the texts present much of the same story line, only written in very different time periods. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s famous play, ââ¬Å"Macbethâ⬠, was written in 1606 in honour of King Jamesââ¬â¢ coronation, while Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s, Frankenstein was written as a gothic novel in 1818. Despite the different time periods that they were written in, both of the stories contain a dark and supernatural atmosphere which evokes feelings of terror in readers. ââ¬Å"Macbethâ⬠and Frankenstein share similar quests and tragic flaws, but the treatment of their loved ones is very different. In regards to the quests of the ââ¬Ëmonstersââ¬â¢ in each story, they are very similar in a number of different ways. In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tale, Macbethââ¬â¢s quest was that of power. He was bent on being king, so much so that he compromised everything to become the king. All of his ambition and efforts were directed at becoming king and staying king. To him, this required the murder of the previous king, King Duncan. Later on we see that he has even more innocent men, women, and children killed in hopes of sealing his position of power. For example, Banquo and McDuffââ¬â¢s wife and children were murdered at Macbethââ¬â¢s orders because they directly or indirectly posed a threat to his throne. In Frankensteinââ¬â¢s case, his quest is simply to have power over death. He successfully creates life from death, but fails to see the long-term consequences for his actions, resulting in much more death than life. In both cases, the characters were aiming for a goal that can easily lead to compromise and ruin, and that is the goal of power. It is in no way wrong to have a desire to become king or strive to discover a way to overcome sickness and disease, but when those desireââ¬â¢s get out of control and there is simply too much ambition, then often the measures that are taken to achieve these desires are wrong. For example, Frankenstein madeà the mistake of prioritizing his creation over his relationship to Elizabeth, his fiancà ©e. Macbeth also sacrifices his reputation and integrity to become king for a short period of time filled with internal struggle and guilt. As you can see, both of the ââ¬Ëmonstersââ¬â¢ end up sacrificing things that they shouldnââ¬â¢t have in order to achieve their goals. One of the biggest differences between the two stories is the way in which the characters treat their loved ones, the ones they hold dear to themselves. In both cases, neither of our characters treated them very well. In Frankensteinââ¬â¢s case, the ones that he cared about or should have cared about most were his beloved Elizabeth, his father, his brother, and best friend, Henry Clerval. Throughout the entire novel, Frankenstein is completely consumed by his creation of the monster. First of all, he isolates himself from his loved ones to create the monster, and abandons them more and more as he becomes depressed and later embarks on another project to appease the monster he has created. Finally, he realizes that as a result of abandoning his own creation and abandoning his family and friends, he has lost them all. In Macbethââ¬â¢s case, his loved one, Lady Macbeth, was deeply involved in his wrong actions and even inspired some of them. She was the master mind behind the plot to assassinate King Duncan and convinced Macbeth to do the deed. After all the shedding of innocent blood, the long and sleepless nights, and the never ending struggle with guilt, Lady Macbeth took her own life, leaving Macbeth alone to face his much deserved death. Instead of looking out for his wife, Macbeth instead abandons her to hopelessness and ultimate despair as he murderously presses on in his quest for power. In conclusion, after looking taking a little closer by comparing and contrasting them these two texts, we can discover that they have their similarities and their differences. Both Macbeth and Frankenstein share a similar quest, and that is the quest for power. They also both have the same weaknesses of too much ambition and not enough integrity. However, we can also see that the characters differ in regards to how they treat their loved ones. Macbeth includes his wife in his evil deeds, resulting in her death. Frankenstein abandons the monster and excludes his family and friends,à resulting in their deaths too. Therefore, it could be said that ââ¬Å"Macbethâ⬠and Frankenstein share similar quests and tragic flaws, but the treatment of their loved ones is very different.

Frankenstein: Theme of The Other
One of the greatest corresponding attributes between Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein and modern day society is the prominence of appearance and acceptance in society. Throughout modern day society and the society portrayed in Frankenstein, a person is judged primarily on appearance. Social prejudices are commonly founded from appearance, ranging from skin color to weight. Perceptions are then based off of these prejudices. A person will then act a certain way towards the person the prejudices are based off of. The parallel drawn between the societies is that they are very appearance-based, which is brought to the attention in contrast of the hideous monster and the common human being. The ââ¬Å"Otherâ⬠is an individual recognized by a community as not belonging, as being unusual in an essential way that differentiates from everyone else in the group. The group or community sees itself and its members as the norm and those who differ from the norm, as the Other. Identified as lacking fundamental characteristics possessed by the group, the Other is usually always seen as lesser or inferior and treated consequently. The group defining the Other may be an entire society, a social class, a community within a society, or even a local gang. (Melani 1) The Other is not essentially a numerical minority. In a country or territory is over taken by a regal power, the more numerous natives can become the Other, for instance, the British rule in India where the native Indians outnumbered the British 4,000 to 1. (Melani 1) Likewise, women are classified and judged by men, the dominant group or persons, in relationship to themselves, so that they become the Other. Hence Aristotle states: ââ¬Å"The female is a female by virtue of a certain lack of qualities; we should regard the female nature as afflicted with a natural defectiveness. â⬠(Melani 1) The outsider is a term that is commonly confused with the Other, but they are not identical. The outsider may have the opportunity to be accepted by and incorporated into the group. The Other, however, is distinguished as different in kind, as lacking in some fundamental trait or traits sets the individual apart from the group. Therefore the Other is doomed forever to remain separate and desolate, to forever remain outside of the group unless the groupââ¬â¢s outlook is subject to change. (Melani 1) In Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein, the creature, opposed by his maker and rejected by society, exemplifies otherness. Along with the fact that he serves as a converse example of natural reproduction, the monster has an extremely grotesque appearance resulting in severe isolation and eventually leading to his implacable and callous behavior. In Frankenstein, beauty is considered a virtue of good, while deformity and ugliness are inescapably associated with evil. In many instances, the monsterââ¬â¢s repulsiveness is equated with him being evil. After fleeing from the first sight of the conscious monster, Victor states: ââ¬Å"I stepped fearfully in: the apartment was empty, and my bedroom was also freed from its hideous guest. I could hardly believe that so great a good fortune could have befallen me, but when I became assured that my enemy had indeed fled, I clapped my hands for joy and ran down to Clerval. (Shelley 52) Victor implies that just because the monster, that he created, is hideous, he must be his enemy. Even the creator of the beast fails to give him one chance at acceptance to society and the world. This theme only begins here. When the monster confronts the William, Victorââ¬â¢s youngest brother, William exclaims: ââ¬Å"`Let me go,' he cried; `monster! Ugly wretch! You wish to eat me and tear me to pieces. You are an ogre. Let me go, or I will tell my papa. â⬠(Shelley 144) The monster only faces further isolation as not even the young boy will give him a chance to be accepted before concluding him a wretch. Even when the monster saves the life of a girl drowning in a river, as a result of his appearance, he is not rewarded, but shot due to assumptions made from because of his appearance. ââ¬Å"This was then the reward of my benevolence! I had saved a human being from destruction, and as a recompense I now writhed under the miserable pain of a wound which shattered the flesh and bone. Inflamed by pain, I vowed eternal hatred and vengeance to all mankind. â⬠(Shelley 143) The monster shows here that even when seen doing a good deed, he is still rejected by society and proclaimed evil, based off his external features. The division of beauty and repulsiveness as related to good and evil stem from the novelââ¬â¢s Romantic influences. The monster eventually realizes his place in the world. He begins to embrace his isolation and position as the Other. Once learning how to read, he begins to decipher Victorââ¬â¢s journal during the creation of the monster: ââ¬Å"Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even YOU turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance. Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him, but I am solitary and abhorred. â⬠(Shelley 131) The monster, now aware that his own creator is horrified by his existence, becomes increasingly anguished about his position in the world. ââ¬Å"I am malicious because I am miserable. Am I not shunned and hated by all mankind? You, my creator, would tear me to pieces and triumph, remember that, and tell me why I should pity man more than he pities me? â⬠(Shelley 147) The monster, abandoned by his God and unable to find a place in the world, admits here to Victor that his callous deeds were products of his grave desolation. The monster is unable to identify his purpose of existence. ââ¬Å"I was dependent on none and related to none. The path of my departure was free, and there was none to lament my annihilation. My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What did this mean? Who was I? What was I? These questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them. â⬠(Shelley 141) Unable to make sense of his being, he questions Victor on his purpose for life. Why was he created to live a life of such inconceivable misery? From the text, we can learn that one should never judge someone by mainly appearance but by the content of their character. Frankenstein had a loving and compassionate soul inside of his hideous exterior. Sadly, Victor had to learn this lesson the hard way through the monsterââ¬â¢s heinous path of destruction in his hunt for revenge. Othersââ¬â¢ are still being distinguished to this day in modern society. Others today are being distinguished by race, social class and even sexual orientation. Insiders, or those seperate of the norm in society, specifically American society, generally share uniform traits such as origin of birth and success by economic terms. (Melani 1) The Others are those who are either poor or who, in some way, do not share the general values of American society. The parallel that attractive people are more likely to be accepted in society stems from the influence from the media. The media tells society what is and what isnââ¬â¢t attractive. Amanda Grable writes because man lives in society and is rarely secluded, man forms the majority of its ideas of self based on comparisons made from external stimuli. (Grable 1) This external stimuli can be made up of images of ones self in comparison of images of other people. It is commonly known that the main goal of most media is centered on advertisement, or a way to win customers over to buy their products. One of the universal ways this is accomplished is through showing images of attractive, happy people using these products. A study of 4,294 network commercials revealed that 1 out of every 3. 8 commercials send some sort of ââ¬Å"attractiveness message,â⬠(Grable 2) With all this dependency on self image, itââ¬â¢s hard not to see why humans are so quick to judge solely off of appearance. People in society are always creating sets of differences to differentiate between one another; from skin color, weight or even fashion sense. Self image is the underlying back bone of society. Judgments are consistently being made on oneââ¬â¢s appearance by every member in society. This is the parallel drawn within modern day society and the novel.

Answer question - Essay Example ounterparts saw marriage as something coming from a divine power ââ¬â that of a god-father and a goddess-mother who bless the union in marriage rituals and sexual intercourse. Lawler describes pagan marriage as ââ¬Å"syncretisticâ⬠(Lawler: 8) or fusing two opposing meanings ââ¬â that of both divine and human action. Fertility from human sexual intercourse is considered a divine blessing. 2. Discuss what you think about the story of Hosea and Gomer. Explain the understanding of God that is the basis of the pagan custom of ââ¬Å"temple prostitution.â⬠State how what Hosea said about the relationship between God and Israel differed from that pagan custom. Hosea followed Godââ¬â¢s command to him to marry Gomer, a harlot who participated in sexual rituals in temples as re-enactment of the sexual intercourse between pagan god Baal and his wife and sister, Anat. Hoseaââ¬â¢s marriage to Gomer mirrored the relationship between God and Israel because it was unconditional. Although Gomer was unfaithful to Hosea, he remained faithful to her and even bought her back when she was auctioned off to men. Godââ¬â¢s love for Israel was the same. Even if Israel turned its back on God in favor of Baal, God still saved it from ruin. Pagan marriage is conditional and is open to divorce while marriage in Jewish tradition is supposed to be unconditional and does not approve of divorce. Anachronism means something that is not appropriate to the times. In this reading, it is reflected on two things: love and divorce. Hoseaââ¬â¢s account of Gomerââ¬â¢s and Israelââ¬â¢s faithlessness not being reasons to turn away from them justifies the marriage covenant. Staying with them and remaining faithful is the true meaning of unconditional love. Marriage is a covenant that spouses should enter with loyalty, service and obedience. Love comes from divine covenant to human marriage, and Yahwehââ¬â¢s covenant fidelity to Israel should be emulated by all married couples. Thus, in Malachiââ¬â¢s book, Yahweh confirmed

Human resource strategies should be underpinned by 'organisation Essay
Human resource strategies should be underpinned by 'organisation development' theories which suggest ways that people in an organisation should be managed - Essay Example (Cusack, no date, p.1) 1. Human Resource ââ¬â This is referring to an inventory of talents, skills and capabilities of a group of persons which may be tapped for a purpose of economic value. The FreeDictionary by Farlex, 2005, defines is as ââ¬Å"The company department charged with finding, screening, recruiting and training job applicants, as well as administering employee-benefit programs 2. Organizational Development ââ¬â It is basically a method for facilitating change and development in people (styles, values, skills), technology (greater simplicity, complexity), and in organizational processes (relationships, roles). For example, if a HR manager wants to introduce a form of participative management where a paternalistic style has traditionally existed, he or she would have to become an ââ¬Å"inside change agent.â⬠(Chruden & Sherman, 1984, p.548) 4. Human resource strategies ââ¬â It therefore means plans for the maximum use of the inventory of talents, skills and capabilities of group of persons which may be tapped for a purpose of economic value. 5. Organizational Development Strategies ââ¬â We could define it as a plan to facilitate change and development in people, in technology and in organizational processes. The topic also defines OD strategy by saying, ââ¬Å"which suggests that people in the organization should be managed.â⬠The proposition must be true because one cannot have human resource strategies without human beings and human resource does not only talk about individual human resource in isolation but also of how to combine these individual resources in the context of an organization (Dictionary Definition of organisation, 2005) or group of humans or people to attain corporate objectives. A corporation, a partnership or even a sole proprietorship is a business organization with people in it either in the form of an employee, manager,

Trading Blocs NAFTA Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Trading Blocs NAFTA - Case Study Example Under the NAFTA, all non-tariff barriers to agricultural trade between the United States and Mexico were eliminated. In addition, many tariffs were eliminated immediately, with others being phased out over periods of 5 to 15 years. This allowed for an orderly adjustment to free trade with Mexico, with full implementation beginning January 1, 2008 (North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), 2011). It should be noted that the elimination of non-tariff barriers would help free flow of goods and services between United States and Mexico. Same way free flow of goods and services are in place with Canada also. In short, these three countries are benefitted immensely because of the formation of NAFTA. Another major advantage of NAFTA is the increment of bargaining power of these countries in international market. These three countries are producing certain goods and services which are rare in other countries. Regional co-operation helps these countries to fix prices for their products in international market. In the absence of regional co-operation, these countries may compete each other international market which is not good for the interests of any of these countries. In short, NAFTA helps America, Mexico and Canada to work on a common platform to safeguard their interests. Increased cooperation between these countries may result in increased integration of this region under one umbrella. NAFTA created the world's largest free trade area, which now links 450 million people producing $17 trillion worth of goods and services.
